The Africa Cup of Nations, commonly known as the Cannes or Total Energy Africa Cup of Nations as its main sponsor, is the main international men’s football competition in Africa.Ratified by the Confederation of African Football, it was first held in 1957 in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

The Africa Cup of Nations is one of the most important sports tournaments in the world, with a large audience in Africa and the world. The tournament contributes to the promotion of football awareness in Africa, and the development of the game on the continent.

Launched in 1957, the Africa Cup of Nations was initially called the African Football Cup of Nations, then renamed the Africa Cup of Nations in 1970.

Initially, the tournament was played every two years, but it was changed to every four years in 1980.

The last years of the Africa Cup of Nations have witnessed some important developments, including:

  • Increasing the number of teams participating in the tournament from 16 to 24 in 2019.
  • Changing the tournament system from the group system to the league system in the group stage in 2023.

The Africa Cup of Nations is played in a knockout mode, with the two best teams from each group qualifying for the round of 16. The two qualifying teams from each group then play each other in the round of 16, then the two winners from each match play each other in the quarter-finals, then the two winners from each match play each other in the semi-finals, and then the two winners from each match play each other in the final.

In 2019, the number of teams participating in the tournament was increased from 16 to 24. Thus, the tournament has the largest number of teams participating in any international football tournament.

The top two teams from each group qualify for the round of 16, in the following order:

The 24 teams participating in the tournament are divided into six groups, each group comprising four teams. Each team plays with the other teams in their group once.

The top two teams from each group advance to the round of 16, as well as the top four third-placed teams.

The winners of the round of 16 matches advance to the quarter-finals.

The winners of the quarter-finals qualify for the semi-finals.

The winners of the semi-finals play the final match of the tournament.

Egypt is the most successful nation to win the Africa Cup of Nations, having won the tournament seven times. Algeria is in second place, winning the championship twice. Ghana comes in third, winning the championship five times.

The Africa Cup of Nations 3 202 will be held in Ivory Coast from 13 January to 13 February 2024.

Algeria’s team is based on a strong attacking line led by Riyad Mehrez, who is considered one of the best players in the world. The Algerian team also has a strong defense led by Rami Ben Sbaini, who is one of the best defenders on the continent.

Algeria are expected to play in the 4-3-3 squad, with Mohamed Lamine Amoura in the center of the spearhead, Riad Mahrez in the right wing, Ismail bin Nasser in the center of the defender, and Rami bin Sibaini in the center of the left back.
